PLAYWRIGHT

Leona’s Song

A father and his five-year old daughter sail the world. A tale that begins like Peter Pan and becomes the Mahabharata. Leona’s Song is a solo play with music, written by Morgan Hooper and composed by his long-time friend and collaborator, the award-winning Brazilian singer, Pedro Sa Moraes.

The play was first conceived in 2021 while Hooper was completing his graduate studies at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He also performed the role of the father in this production directed by the late Ian Spink. Inspired by the evocative landscapes of the Isle of Skye, Leona is written in a lyrical free-verse which blends the styles of the Homeric tradition and contemporary spoken word.

In 2022, the collaboration between Hooper and Sa Moraes continued, as they workshopped a Portuguese telling of the play at Silo Cultural in Paraty, Brazil. This time, Hooper put on the director cap, while Sa Moraes became the performer. Determined to see the play actualize its full potential, two-years later, the pair produced the play for a 10-performance run in Manhattan to resounding success.

Wild Ass

A mother. A father. A slave. An ass. Before there were two people, two religions, there was one family. Wild Ass is a retelling of the creation of the prophet Abraham’s family, and how the banishment of his first son Ishmael and the fallout that ensued, set the stage for millennia of division and war in the Middle East.

Written by the Jewish-American playwright Morgan Hooper, Wild Ass is a compassionate interrogation of the story of Ishmael told from four perspectives - Abraham, his wife Sarah, their servant Hagar, and finally the family’s first born son. The first half of the play stays close to the narrative of the Torah, while the latter half is inspired by the Muslim tradition.

Wild Ass is now in pre-production.
